An occlusal splint may be recommended by your dentist to protect the teeth and jaw joints from excessive clenching or grinding of the teeth (bruxism). 
Bruxism can cause headaches, pain in the jaw, lead to excessive wear or fracture of the teeth and may cause permanent damage to teeth and jaw joints.
