White Fillings
White fillings can be made of composite resin, glass ionomer cement or porcelain.
Composite resin is ideal for restorations on front teeth where aesthetics are vitally important. Back teeth can also be filled with white restorations. Composite resin
bonds very well to enamel so in many applications it is possible to be extremely conservative ie; minimal drilling is required when a tooth requires a filling.
Glass ionomer cements bond well to all tooth structures and are used in many applications in dentistry.
Porcelain Inlays and Onlays
Porcelain is stronger than composite resin and glass ionomer cement, so if you want an aesthetic restoration that is strong this is sometimes an option.
Many teeth that require fillings can be quite weak and may have signs of breakdown and fracture. Whilst these teeth can be filled, often this does not provide strength or protection to the tooth. Weak teeth such as these may benefit from amalgam, composite resin, porcelain or gold crowns.
Amalgam Fillings
Amalgam restorations (silver fillings) are used by dentists in Australia to repair and restore millions of teeth every year. It is safe, strong, long-lasting, easy to use and cost effective but nowadays is largely superseded by tooth coloured composite resin.
